NIE numbers in Spain

What is a NIE number?

The NIE number is a fiscal identification number specifically for non Spanish nationals.

NIEs are issued in certain Police stations throughout Spain.

The NIE is issued as an A4 sheet of paper. The document is now issued without an expiry date.

Why might I need a NIE number?

A NIE number can be required for a variety of reasons, such as;

  • Purchase a property in Spain
  • Renting a property
  • Buying a car
  • Obtaining a mobile phone contract
  • Opening a bank account in Spain
  • Starting a business
  • Filing tax returns
  • Legal matters
  • Move to Spain
  • Accepting an inheritance

I previously obtained a NIE but have lost my certificate. What can I do?

If you have lost your certificate and do not have a copy, you can obtain another in person at a police station.

Alternatively, we can obtain one on your behalf.

The NIE number will be the same as on your original certificate.

I bought a house several years ago before NIEs were required. I am now selling. Do I need a NIE to do so?

The present system of NIEs was introduced at the end of 2004. If you bought a property prior to this date you may still not have a NIE.

If you wish to sell your property, you will need to obtain a NIE prior to doing so. We assist clients in these circumstances as part of our conveyancing service. You can read more here.

However, if you have been filing non resident tax returns as a property owner, you may have been allocated a NIE number without knowing it.

Are NIEs issued for children?

It is possible to obtain a NIE number for children under the age of 18.

There is usually additional documentation required, such as a birth certificate with a certified translation.

Regions often apply different rules for child NIE applications, and will wish to know the reason for the application.

Is the application process simple?

Appointments to obtain NIEs must be booked in advance.

In certain areas there could be up to a 3 month wait for an appointment.

This particularly affects areas with a large number of foreign nationals, such as Alicante, Murcia, Málaga, Balearics and Canary Islands.

GB Abogados are able to obtain NIE certificates on behalf of clients. This means that no travel to Spain is necessary.

We arrange NIE appointments in several locations in Spain. This ensures that we can obtain early appointments for our clients.

What documentation is required?

The documentation required is limited to a certified passport copy, legalised Power of Attorney and a passport photograph.

GB Abogados provide the Power of Attorney.

The Power of Attorney needs to be signed in front of a notary and then legalised for use abroad.

We assist with locating a notary in your home country and arranging a convenient appointment time.
